Listening, Reading and Writing

You will take the Listening, Reading and Writing tests on a computer, alongside other candidates, in the exam room.

All three tests take place on the same day, with no breaks between them, and last approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Speaking

The Speaking test is taken one to one with an IELTS examiner. Depending on examiner availability, the interview may be face to face or by video call, always live and from the test centre.

At Certify, the Speaking test takes place on the same day as the rest of the exam.

With IELTS on computer, your results are available within 1 to 5 days.

IELTS on computer tools and features

The IELTS on computer application includes a number of tools that can help you manage the test.
Adjust the volume at any point during the Listening test.
Personalise the screen: choose between three text sizes and different contrast options.
Review your answers within each part of the test.
Keep track of time with the counter at the top of the screen. When one minute is left, the indicator changes colour to warn you.
View the questions and the text at the same time in Reading, thanks to the split screen layout.
Highlight words and phrases, flag questions to come back to later and add notes.
See your word count as you write in Writing.

Why take IELTS on computer at a test centre?

IELTS on computer is not the same as IELTS Online
IELTS on computer is taken at an official test centre, whereas IELTS Online is taken from home or another suitable private location. IELTS Online is also only available for IELTS Academic and is not accepted by some organisations.

Any questions?

Can I take notes during the IELTS on computer test?
Yes. You will always have a sheet of paper and a pencil to take notes. Even so, we recommend entering your answers directly on the computer. You can also highlight words and phrases on screen and insert notes.
Do I have to bring my own computer or headphones?
No. The centre will provide the computer and the headphones you need to take the test. You may only enter the exam room with your ID document and, if you wish, a bottle of water in a transparent container. All your other belongings must be left in the area provided.
Can I go to the toilet during the test?
Yes, but there are some rules. You can only go to the toilet once you have started the Reading or Writing part, and never during the last 10 minutes. Also, only one person may go at a time.
Can I write in capital letters?
Yes. You can write your answers in capital letters if you find it more comfortable. You must be careful with spelling and use capital letters correctly where spelling rules require it.
Can I move on to the next part of the test if I finish early?
No. Each part of the test has a set time and you cannot move on to the next one before that time is up. For example, even if you finish the Reading in less than 60 minutes, you will have to wait until that part ends before starting the Writing. Likewise, if you finish the Writing early, you will not be able to leave the room until the time allotted to that test has finished.
Can I review my answers during the test?
Yes. You can go back to previous questions and change your answers as long as you stay within the same part of the test. However, once a part of the test has finished, you cannot go back to it. For example, when the Listening ends and the Reading begins, you will no longer be able to change your Listening answers.
Do incorrect answers lose marks?
No, so we recommend answering every question.
