Does an IELTS certificate expire?

Many universities and immigration authorities require an IELTS certificate obtained within the last two years. But does the certificate actually expire? We explain what IELTS officially says and why this rule is applied.
Does an IELTS certificate expire?

Do degrees expire? Does a driving licence expire? Does a piano qualification expire?

Qualifications certify an achievement attained at a specific point in time.

It is well understood that if you do not practise your profession, drive, or play the piano, the level you have achieved may decline over time. The same applies to English language proficiency.

For this reason, most universities and immigration authorities require a language certificate that is no more than two years old. While this may seem illogical or unfair in some cases, this rule is applied to avoid the need to assess each individual case separately.

IELTS states the following: “It is recommended that the candidate’s language ability as indicated in this Test Report Form be re-assessed after two years from the day of the test.”

In other words, they recommend that your English level be reassessed, but the organisations requesting the certificate decide how this should be done, whether through further evidence, additional testing, or an alternative qualification.
